Closure of Lake Worth Drive-In and Swap Shop Impacts Vendors
The Lake Worth Drive-In and Swap Shop is set to close on October 3, following a decision by the Village of Palm Springs that prohibits flea markets and outdoor theaters under its zoning regulations. Vendors have until September 30 to cease operations, leaving many in a precarious situation as they rely on this market for their livelihoods.
Vendors expressed their shock at the announcement, with some stating that they were informed of the closure on the same day they paid their September rent. The management of the Swap Shop indicated that efforts to negotiate with the village to keep the market open were unsuccessful. A letter from Palm Springs officials clarified that a 2004 annexation agreement allowing the operation of these businesses had expired, leading to the enforcement of current zoning laws.
As a result, vendors are now facing an uncertain future, with some exploring new locations while others fear permanent closure. Although relocation to a Fort Lauderdale site has been suggested, many vendors find this option impractical.
